I remember waking up at 2 o’clock in the morning to go on a move up to another station. I was working with a guy who obviously was very drowsy and wasn’t able to wake himself up. He was pretty stubborn though and insisted on driving no matter how tired he became. He didn’t want to be the one to ask for help. It Being 2 in the morning, this wasn’t something that was unusual. We were both exhausted. We had literally laid down just an hour before. It was just one of those nights.
We started along the way. There wasn’t any traffic and so we were hoping we could get to the next station without any issue and head right back to catch a little sleep before the next call, but we encountered a stoplight right away. I was about to doze off, but caught myself because I had remembered how when I was an EMT, my medic partner would always fall asleep. It was difficult to stay awake because there was nobody to talk to.
So I started talking about this or that — honestly, I don’t remember the conversation. But I glanced over and noticed my partner sleeping at the stoplight. Because he was snoring away, I thought I would try to wake him up by shouting, “Hey!!”
He immediately woke up and I said “You just fell asleep. Do you want me to take the wheel?”
He shouted at me, “No I didn’t! I can drive just fine!”
‘Really?’ I thought to myself. I caught him in the act and he was going to deny that he was sleeping. No way was I going to let this one slide.
“Yes, you did,” I said, “You fell asleep through two lights.”
He then questioned back, “I DID???”
So there it was. He agreed to pull over and I took over driving. Nothing like a little late night fun!
